Hello Fellow Beauties:

I just wanted to put up a few words about Obama’s Year of Service which he proposed earlier this year. A lot of people took advantage of this for MLK Day, including the Prez himself, but unfortunately a lot of New York service outlets filled up for that day but now they are in need.
I know I’ve been waiting a little, maybe because I’d like to do something outside and it’s still so freaking cold out, or maybe I ‘ve just been procrastinating, but I want to put some service opportunities out there for those of you who want to donate a little time to those in need, especially now when we could all use a little good Karma.
On MLK day Brian Lehrer of WNYC had Nicky Goren, acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, talk about different service opportunities. The show is available here if you’d like to hear it.
If you are looking for a service event, you can head to www.usaservice.org. Here you can put in location, type of service and a date range and you will get a list of open events you can attend to do some good. Some quick responses I got when I searched for now until may 09 were:
The Unemployment Network March on March 19th.
A Health and Education Workshop for Sex Ed on March 28th
Hands on NY Day, cleaning and revitalizing NY City Parks on April 25th.
The Hands on New York Day is run by NY Cares, a city organization specializing in service and outreach programs. You can visit their site and sign up to be a volunteer or just look at upcoming events they are having to see if they are up your alley. The biggest event coming up for them is the Hands on Day, which sounds like it could be great for the gardener or clean freak in all of us.
You can also visit your local church to see if they have service opportunities coming up, like a big cleaning event or a coat drive, food drive or soup kitchen that needs a helping hand.
If you are in Greenpoint, the Greenpoint Reform Church hands out bags of groceries to those in need so they always need food donations and/or monetary donations. They also have a meal served on Wednesday nights where they need extra hands to help with the meals. They can be found at 136 Milton Street.
St.John’s Bread and Light is a mobile soup kitchen going around impoverished areas of Brooklyn offering hot food to those that need some. They make stops in East New York, Brownsville and Williamsburg. They take monetary and volunteer donations.
There are plenty of opportunities to help out throughout the year, including The Avon Breast Cancer Walk, October 10th-11th, Autism Speaks Walk, May 3rd and June 14th, Helping out the Food Bank of NY, and City Harvest.
I’d love to organize an evening of service for the lovely ladies of girls nite to make a difference, so keep an eye out for a fun service nite, beauties style.
If you have more service opportunities that you like to do or you are looking forward to doing make sure to leave it in the comments for all of us to see.
See you at the Next BB Event!

The Sangria was slammin, the Brews were banging and the Conversation was crazy as usual, it must have been girls night!

I’m tipping my hat to the chickies that made it out to our first real BB night at the Habitat the other night. The laughs were aplenty and the drinks were cheap! Although the bar choices for music and movies were a little off from what I would consider ladies night, “Being John Malkovich,” and “OK Computer,” we made it our own. The Habitat was a perfect place to get a cozy booth of lady friends together and share some wintery good times.

I also wanna give a shout out to some of the newer ladies who are coming out and say so glad to see some new blood! Keep coming, great to have you!

Don’t forget to make your suggestions for the next BB night in our suggestion page!
Keep it posted here for details on the next event… I’m hearing something badass like paintball and lasertag!

Welcome to our new site on the web! It’s a place where Beauties can connect. You don’t have to live in Brooklyn to be a beauty, it’s just where we tend to hang out. As you know, we have been working to make a smooth transition from the name Shark Week to Brooklyn Beauties on Facebook. We also wanted to let you know about some of the cool things that you’ll find at our new site brooklynbeauties.com.
As always, we will continue Brooklyn’s best by hosting our bi-monthly events. New things that we have added include an events suggestion page. We would love it if you posted your ideas for upcoming events; if it’s a bake off your itchin’ for or a wine tasting night, let us know!!! Also if you ever feel so inclined as to host your own Brooklyn Beauties night; this is also a great place to tell us and we will help you with coordinating all the details.
